Cadouin small medieval village renovated with taste, is the country Bastides. At the border of Perigord Black and Purple Périgord, between the Salard and Bergerac. The hilly and wooded area, the forest of Bessede and water Bélingou drew the Cistercians. During the centuries of pilgrims around the Holy Shroud, were living the village. A great hall, paved streets invite you to stroll and explore the heritage. Classified as a major site in Aquitaine (only 3 in the Dordogne), this village is a must and full of charm. World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Abbey Cadouin is a pure masterpiece.Founded in 1115. Perigord brought a canon after the first crusade a linen cloth believed to have wrapped the head of Christ. The abbey became the seat of the Mecca pilgrimage: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lion Heart, Louis IX, Charles V, traveled here to receive the Holy Shroud reported Crusades. It was not until 1934 that a study of weaving relic revealed he was actually a beautifully embroidered cloth by some Egyptian craftsmen in the eleventh century, and again he bore inscriptions Muslim! It is not visible currently (November 2009) because it is being restored. The visit of the abbey dark and sober at the time, with its beautiful stained glass, some of a recent bill and modern, do not accept visitors. Only the cloister, built at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, deserves a visit. Capitals, keystones and fallout vault materialize sins and virtues in the stone. From both sides of the chair of the abbot, two high reliefs tell the procession of monks and the road to Calvary of Christ. The four doors, finally, allow comparison with the Gothic Renaissance.
