Marquèze Open Air Museum evokes, on the site of a former neighbourhood of Sabres village, the transformation of the Landes de Gascogne at the end of the XIX° century with the onset of forestry development. Master’s house: the huge canopy in facade shows the status of the owners. As early as 1890 the pine exploitation trended towards a middle-class outlook: larger openings and windows, commercial furniture… * One of the rooms shows a scene of the death of an old master and the rites related to the bereavement. Another room a formerly reserved to the beefs shows a Christmas tale. The airial: is one of the greatest elements of the Landes region traditional society. Nowadays, it is an emblematic landscape of the Landes-de-Gascogne. The barn overtures « catch » some characteristics elements of this particular area: housing, building, hardwood, fields… Ploughman’s house: under the authority of the master, the ploughman as a first rank status in the societal hierarchy. The XIX° century farming society had a widespread and generalised activity which is evocated by the presence of a loom in one of the room. Miller’s house: even if there is no canopy, this house has been built with the same plans as the master’s house. * One of the rooms shows the preparation of the fiancée before the wedding while at the back of the house callers greet the event with whoops! The glade of tales: at the end of the XIX° century, Félix Arnaudin ethnographer and folklorist from the Landes gathered all the Gascon culture of the Grande Lande. The tales play here an essential part in the oral transmission of history. The river: is one of the greatest elements of the society’s landscape. This river drains naturally the environing plateau and eases the sprawling of human settlement along the river.
